From BYOB Venue to Expansive Entertainment Hub
Founded initially as the ping pong club "King Pong," Ricochet kicked off in 2011 alongside the Des Moines Social Club. Conceived by Brad Argo and Justin Mandelbaum, King Pong quickly evolved into a globally attended weekly Table Tennis league, hosting players from diverse countries.
East Village Era
After three years at the Des Moines Social Club, Ricochet, then named King Pong, moved to Des Moines' East Village. This unique 10,000 sq ft space on the second floor became a vibrant hub for ping pong enthusiasts and underwent a rebranding to Ricochet.
Originally envisioned as a full-service bar and event space, Ricochet faced challenges due to the landlord's constraints. Unable to sell alcohol, Ricochet adapted by focusing on event rentals and covers while operating as a BYOB venue.
The Turning Point
Leadership Duo: In 2019, recognizing the rising trend of "competitive socializing," founder Brad Argo sought a strategic shift. He partnered with Mike Utley, a seasoned hospitality professional with a successful track record, to propel Ricochet into its next phase.
New Ventures: The duo sought a main-floor location, leading them to Capital Square in downtown Des Moines. Though delayed by the Covid pandemic, Ricochet finally opened its doors in January 2022, boasting a 12,000 sq ft space connected to the skywalk system and strategically located near downtown's entertainment hub.
